    Successful Athletics Workshop

Today we held our first Athletics Workshop.  Fourteen current (and hopefully newly joining members) turned out in full Winter run training gear at Ballina Sports Center for 9am.

For the first hour of the Workshop Sean Gallagher gave us a very comprehensive presentation (together with slide show) on the elements of run training.  Many of us learned new terms such as Fartlek, Tempo, Cruise, and Equivalent Performance.  Sean had us all then make our way in cars and on foot to Belleek Woods where he brought us through a hills training session.  The morning was dry and frosty with no wind and Belleek Woods showed off its mid Winter colours.

Everyone who participated found the training very beneficial.

On behalf of the Club and everyone who participated a big Thank You to Sean Gallagher for giving the Workshop and also to Conor for the use of the Ballina Sports Center.

Hopefully we will organise a monthly run session over a set course from the end of January to allow us all to determine our training progression.

    Niall Mellon Township Trust

    Hi All,

Just a quick note from Cape Town in South Africa to say that we (all 2000 of us) finished our building blitz today, and met our target of building 250 houses for the people of Khaylitsha township in Cape Town.

The work was extremely physical and tougher than any triathlon I have ever attempted, but very rewarding, if anyone needs some plastering done in the new year, I'm your man.

Thanks to the Liquid motion club and all those people who made private donations, if you competed in the Salmon Run triathlon, that includes you.

Merry Christmas from Mick and Louise

    Club Swimming Training

The first of hopefully many winter swimming sessions will take place on the 7th of November in the Ballina Swimming Pool.

The first session is just a trial to gage interest levels and to see what kind of standard we all are. Hopefully from this we will be able to judge the direction of the sessions and how to progress the sessions into the future. If there is the interest then the club swimming training will become a permenent fixure this winter.

The session will run for 1 hour starting at 9:30 pm. The price has not been fixed as of yet as this will depend on numbers taking part. All members are of course welcome.

Hope to see you all there.

The swim is being organised by Orla Donnelly at Ballina Swimming Pool. For more information ring 096 70506.

    Charity swim

Here is a copy of an e-mail I just received

I'm swimming across Galway Bay on the 9th of August to raise money for Link Community Development.
The swim is 11km, but apparently with currents and not swimming perfectly straight, it works out as 13km.

Any support would be a bonus so if your triathlon club would like to sponsor me you can make a donation at:
    http://www.mycharity.ie/event/galwaybayswim/

    Thanks & Regards,

    Art Mac Manusa

P.S. If anyone is interested in joining in they can contact me on 0861561565. Each person doing the swim will need their own support boat.

    Aquathon Series is back

Well done to everyone who took part in the Crossmolina Aquathon today, especially Lucas and Celene who were the male and female winners respectively.

The hugely popular Aquathon Series that was held last year is back. It will be run over the next 4 consecutive Wednesday evenings meeting at the Gortnor Abbey pier at 7pm.

To keep things simple there will be no handicap system in place this year therefore everyone will be set off at the same time, no fee and unfortunately no post race refreshments. On the final night a BBQ wil be arranged for all the club members who took part in the series.

The series will allow club members to use it as training in preparation for the upcoming triathlons. However there may be a prize for the most improved male and female over the series.

unfortunately our direct line to saint christopher hasnt worked as there has been another delay with our new kit, which wont be available till next week .This delay has occured despite our order been placed in plenty of time as the suppliers manufacturer went bust, and another had to be found at short notice and despite assurances that we would have the gear in time for the salmon run, we have been let down again, on a positive note when we do get the gear we will be in a position to offer a significant discount to club members , we will all be in style for belmullet!!

Yearly club race and night out.

    Hi all,

A suggestion for this years club race is the olympic distance race in Belmullet on September 20th following by a night on the tiles in An Chéibh in Belmullet that night.  The race course is a good course with a relatively flat bike section followed by a toughish run section ( first 2 kms are on a 35% gradient slope!!!!!).

It would be great to give our support to Jason and everyone in the Kilmore tri club for their first race and ther are still plenty of places remaining.  Online regestration is at http://www.activeeurope.com/Events/index.cfm?AC=EventDetails&E=61302

    River Swim & Clean-Up

There will be a swim in the River Moy for all Liquid Motion Members on Wednesday 2nd July at 5.50pm. (High Tide is at 6pm, so a prompt start is important). Meet at Bachelors walk.

There will be no official safety cover so people swim at their own risk. A 'Buddy-Up' system will be in operation. This means that each person will be paired up with someone of similar ability with whom they must stay with the whole duration of the swim.

After the swim there will be a general clean-up of the swim exit to remove any large stones and other debris!

Also after the swim/clean-up Volunteers will be required to help deliver letters to the residents of Bachelors Walk and Ardnaree Hill areas. All help greatly appreciated.

    IMPORTANT RACE INFORMATION
Dear Competitor, We are now less than 4 weeks away from the PowerAde Salmon Run Triathlon that is to be in Ballina, Co. Mayo on 12th July 2008, and the preparations are going swimmingly, bikingly and runningly too!!! Here are a few points to note for the BIG Day.
    1. Registration will be held at the Ballina Sports & Leisure Centre which is on the same site as the Ballina Swimming Pool and will open at 10.am (not before) on Saturday 12th July and will close at 12 noon (not after), you have been warned. There is no registration on Friday evening. Those athletes arriving after the cut-off time of 12 noon on Saturday will not be registered and subsequently will not be allowed to race. Don’t put me in that situation It will only turn ugly!!!!

    1. All non Triathlon Ireland members and associate members will have to pay their one day licence fee at registration if they have not done so already, there are only a very small number of you who have paid the one day licence fee in advance through the postal entry system and there is no facility in place for the rest of you pay this fee in advance, so have your €15 fee ready as you will be asked to pay it on the morning of the race. The one day licence fee is for your insurance to race and all fees paid go to Triathlon Ireland. Full, Student and Junior members of Triathlon Ireland have their race insurance included with their Triathlon Ireland membership fee. At registration a cross check of Triathlon Ireland membership will be made with the latest Triathlon Ireland membership list 2008. All athletes must remember to bring photo ID with them when registering. Again don’t put me in that situation. No Photo ID No Entry. You have been warned. This includes all non-Triathlon Ireland members.

    1. Transition will also open at 10am on Saturday 12th July and is 2 minutes walk away from the location of registration. Only people wearing the PowerAde Salmon Run Triathlon wrist ban which is included in your race pack will have access into the Transition Area. Bike racks are not numbered and will be on a first come first served basis. My advice to you is register early to get the bike rack that you want.

    1. The swim will be a two wave start, refer to the race handbook for race schedule.

              Wave 1 = Male 20 – 44 Age Groups.

              Wave 2 = Male 16 – 19/Male 45+/All Female/Teams.

    1. The Race Day Schedule can be found in the Race Booklet that you all should have received. I have attached it again with this email. The Race Booklet can also be viewed and is available for download from the Liquid Motion Triathlon Club website at www.liquidmotion.ie
It’s all a bit formal I know, but now you are all informed and there can be no excuses. Good Luck with the rest of your training.See you at the start line.

Another great cycling result for Liquid Motion

The 3rd Connacht 60k road race was held last night from Castlebar to Swinford, Foxford, Pontoon, and Bofeenaun finishing with a gruelling climb up the windy gap.

Excellent times by Bernard McGuinness and Gareth McCormack saw Gareth finishing in the top 5.  Along with his win last week, this puts Gareth in with a chance of winning the series.

Entry to the 2008 Carrick-on-Suir Triathlon and Try-athlon is now open (after a few minor technical hitches!).

First run in 1994, the Carrick Triathlon is one of the most established events on the annual race calendar. Set along the banks of the River Suir, and nestled between the Comeragh Mountains and Slievenamon, the event is renown for the beauty of its surroundings and fairness as a triathlon course.

    • The Triathlon is standard Sprint Distance - 750m swim, 20k cycle and 5k run.
    • The Try-athlon consists of a shorter swim - 500m swim, 20k cycle and 5k run.

Both races are available for online entry via Active Europe with the relevant links to be found at our website, www.tricarrick.com

The closing date for entries is the 5th of July. However entry may close earlier than that if numbers exceed what is expected. Response in the first few hours since registration has opened has been superb so I would urge interested athletes to sign up sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.

Entry prices are €35 for individuals, €20 per person for relay teams and €10 for Juniors. Further information on the race will be available on our website www.tricarrick.com in the coming weeks.

    Thank you for your time,

    Jonathan Kelly

    Gatorade Dublin City Triathlon

The Gatorade Dublin City Triathlon is open for registration. This race is the largest Olympic distance triathlon in the Irish race calendar and is widely considered to be Dublin’s premier triathlon. Registration has opened early this year both to avoid disappointment and to encourage participation at all levels of triathlon by giving plenty of preparation time for race day.

All entrants will be entered in a draw to win an Aqua Sphere XP wetsuit to the value of €300, and on race day there will be spot prizes of individual coaching sessions. A relay team of Olympians will be racing for charity (not prizes) and participants will be able to compare their times against the dream team to see how they compare!  The 2008 Race will be held on the 24th of August and Entries will be via Active Europe for the same price as last year (€50). For entry go to the following link: http://www.activeeurope.com/Events/index.cfm?AC=EventDetails&E=59313 For more information about the race (a video outline of the course will also be available here shortly) please see the link below: http://www.dublincitytriathlon.com/

Due to the size of the race we require a large number of volunteers, so if any of your club members would like to volunteer rather than race you can inform them that this will guarantee them free entry to next year’s race!

    Thanks for you time,
    Liz Lee,

    Joey Hannon Triathlon 2008

The Season has started.  Last Sunday the Joey Hannon Memorial Triathlon took place at University of Limerick.  The day was warm and dry with only a light wind from the South.... a welcome change after the Winter training.  There was great representation from the Club with Paul and Mary, David Donnelly, Gerry Devaney, Pat Hughes and Linda all entering the sprint event.  Paul set off with his usual gusto and jumped onto his bike in third place.  His speed however was too fast for the marshalls who were not quite in position along the cycle route.  Paul managed to overtake the leading female contender (Claire Connor) three times on the bike leg due to a couple of missed turns... still great work in finishing 5th overall.  David D had a tremendous race finishing 20th.  Bernard McGuinness was the sole representative in the standard distance event which was won in a blistering time of 2:00:19 by Irelands Brian Campbell.  For more details on the event and all the results check out the Limerick triathlon club website at www.limericktriathlon.com

    TI Memberships details

Hi all, TI have asked us to check our membership details with their details to see if there is any information missing from their records.  When going through the list I noticed that the TI list didn't have some peoples club on file.  I would ask that everyone would check their details on the TI website as follows

1 Log into the TI website (Log in section is on the left ahnd side of the screen about half way down the screen.  If you have forgotten your login then use the reset password option under the members page)

2 Use the 'Change my details' option under the 'Member Pages' menu. This will allow you to select a club for membership.

This becomes important at the end of the year when the club gets it ranking, where everyones results are tallied together.  Last year we came sixth so hopefully we can improve on this years ranking.  If anyone has any trouble just get in touch with me and i will try to help.

Saturday morning saw 11 runners meet up with Irish running legend Catherina McKiernan for her Chi running workshop.  The course was from 10am to 4pm in the Ramada and was a great success, with all athletes coming away with personal advice on how to improve their running style for speed and efficiency.

You'll have to keep an eye on the Chi 11 for tips on how it's done!

    club duathlon series
round 2 of the liquid motion duathlon series took place on sunday 13th at the ramada hotel. there was a great turnout with 24 starters battling the 4k run\16k cycle and \4k run course helped in no small part by the strong tailwind on the bike which unfortunately meant a strong headwind for the run and cycle on the back of the course, but at least the sun was shining! This was the first competitive outing for many of our club members, michael forde, gareth mccormack, david donnelly, tomas lynn, elaine fox ,sean kellehar              all showed they havent been idle over the winter and posted some great times. It was great to see so many new faces ,monica forde, russell barnes, sean moffat, stephen donnely, sean gallagher, eoin and james brady taking part in their first duathlon. You wouldnt think it by the way they took off after a brief warm up it was sean gallagher who set a blistering pace on the first run joined by a small pack including eoin brady his brother james and michael forde. eoin and sean were inseperable on the run coming in with a very impressive first run of 15.28. Out onto the bike course it was paul dunne who put the tailwind to best use reeling in the leaders and establishing a cushion for the second run which was just enough to hold off fast finishes from michael forde and sean gallagher, to win in a time of 57.20.eoin brady narrowly won the battle of the brady brothers in a very impressive time of 59.05 to finish fourth and fifth respectively. There were some fantastic individual battles out on the course and this produced improoved times for niamh moffat, pauline walsh, mary dunne, conor denneny, marcus allen, eamon kennedy, bernard mcguinness and grace fox, well done to all, the training is paying off!!Special thanks to simon walsh for providing race numbers which he used to good use swapping numbers with his wife pauline, there will definitely have to be a stewards inquiry about that one!, and also to fergus niland who braved the elements to do a great job on the timing. The next duathlon will take place on sunday 18th of may at 10 am from the ramada, all are welcome!

    Connaught Sprint Championships 2008
PowerAde Salmon Run Triathlon Plays Host to Provisional Championships 2008.On-Line entry to the PowerAde Salmon Run Triathlon will open on 1st April 2008.Liquid Motion Triathlon Club is pleased to announce that this years PowerAde Salmon Run Triathlon will be hosting the Connaught Sprint Triathlon Championships 2008 in Ballina, Co Mayo on Saturday 12th July. This is the first year that the Provisional title will be contested in Co. Mayo and the third year of the running of the event and as the race is at the mercy of nature’s tides this year’s race will start at 2p.m in the afternoon. This will undoubtedly help cater to those athletes who will travel from further afield as registration for the event will be on the Saturday morning prior to the start of the race. The 2008 course is virtually the same as the previous 2 years except for a change to the return cycle section with the last 1 mile being on closed roads going through the centre of town which will add to the visual effect of the race. Take a look at the results and pictures from the past 2 years. So, if you are planning a trip to the West this summer why not swim 750m with the salmon starting at the famous Ridgepool in the river Moy, cycle 20km along traffic free country roads of Mayo and enjoy a 5km run through the trees in Beleek woods and all in the heart of Ballina town so don’t be a fool on April 1st and join in the fun, you will not be disappointed. Oh and as I have said before, we have the weather booked! See you all on the start line.Thanks, David.

    Galway Triathlon

Well in these times of feasting we are spoiled for choice when it comes to deciding what Triathlon to make our A, B, C or even D race for that matter. Well here is an excellent opportunity to take part in a quality race that is held by our closest nieghbours in Galway on Saturday 19th July in Carna, Co. Galway.

There is no doubt about it, it is a tough one but the scenery around Carna is spectacular and the race atmosphere  is one you will never forget, I know I haven't.

Support your local races and the effort will be reciprocated.

     Good Luck with your training.

    The Ramada Lambada

Paul Dunne was dancing once again as he showed good early season form to take the first Duathlon Race held at the Ramada Hotel, Ballina.

The forecast for the weekend was for storm force winds, the worst so far this year according to the Met office in Dublin! Well if you waited for a fine day in Mayo you might get a day or two's training in... In July, that is if you were prepared to go out between the showers. Anyway 18 lunatics turned out on what started out as fine Sunday morning, nothing strange there, well 17 and 3/4 as Brian Flannery didn't do the first run as he had to nip back to the pool for his bike and helmet, true to form as it was Brian's first time on the bike this year, prepare to see him on it next time at Mullaghmore.

So, to the action, a gentle warm up was led by yours truly to get the heart rate up and warm the muscles slightly, I didn't want any muscle strains this early on in the season (don't mention it guys) and then they were off.

The format was 4k-15k-4k over a fairly flat fast course, Kieran Heron sped away like lightening hot on the heels to catch our very own Michael Johnson Leonard (you know who you are) and entered T1 in a superb time of 15min 40secs. Kieran is a Veteran Ironman finisher from Knockmore, Ballina and recently defected from the Galway Tri Club, we are thrilled that he has joined Liquid Motion. However, I think Kieran was in Ironman mode during the transition as he allowed Paul Dunne to make up over a minute on him in T1 with them almost coming out together onto the bike leg. This was Kieran's downfall as this is by far Paul's specialty, having broke the hour for 25 miles in 2007, Paul tore up the tarmac on the first of the two lap course before easing up to stroll home on the second run leg in a comfortable time of 57mins 18 secs and he wasn't even riding his new bike.

For the rest of the gang they were also working hard, everyone was showing good form, Bernard McGuiness got on the podium with a third place, or should I say someone masquerading as Bernard in a 12 and 1/2 stone body suit, Bernard is going so well this year, I wish him all the very best as he is training like a demon and deserves every success in 2008.

It was nice to see a few new members racing, Paul Casey gave my wife, Celene a good race and were inseparable on the first run then the bike but I think Paul was not prepared physically or mentally for the onslaught of the second run, although I am sure he will be better prepared next time, watch out Celene, and Bernard for that matter. Mark Loftus from Crossmolina was the other new face and again did very well for his first time and looked fairly whacked crossing the finish line.

It was also nice to see a Niamh, Grace, Pauline, Patricia, Celene and Mary braving the Mayo weather.

True to form the hailstones did arrive and unfortunately caught everyone out on the second run, except for me who was dry and warm in Paul's campervan but spirits were not dampened and everyone finished safe and fairly tired out.

Paul and Mary had arranged with the Ramada Hotel for anyone wanting to use the Tranquillity Spa facilities for a jacuzzi, swim or shower and a few made use of this generous offer from the Hotel which was a welcome relief from the elements.

Hope to see you all and more at the next Duathlon, check the calender on this website for up-and-coming events.

    race report
Last sunday Liquid motion hosted round3 of the connaught mountain bike league at historic beleek woods. Thanks to some trojan work by simon walsh who develloped a challenging 2.4 mile loop which was as hard going up as it was going down.t here was an excellent turnout from the club with half the senior field made up of liquid motion members. There was a large underage participation and the youger riders were more than capable of handling the various climbs, descents and myriad twists and turns on the cross country course, which thanks to simon and michael hopkins was excellently marked out ensuring no one got lost.......i think! It was very encouraging to see so many young riders some as young as 5(well done conor! you did me proud!) and all the parents who braved the cold conditions to cheer the kids on and help out with all the marshalling. We hope to make this an annual event and is predominantly a fun workout for all!

    Coach Development and Education Program

Triathlon Ireland are starting an initiative to develop coaches who will then offer their services to clubs. The primary focus of this is to identify people in clubs who are interested in training to be a coach, have an apptitude for coaching, are willing to put time back into their clubs, and are willing to learn.

The ideal people would have the following skills and attributes:

     i) good communication and people skills;
ii) a keen interest in Triathlon (but not necessarily a lot of
     experience);
iii) some experience of training and competing at triathlon - please
note that you don't have to be a strong athlete i.e. good athletes don't
     always make good coaches;
iv) be willing to contribute time back to their club and the wider
triathlon community e.g. someone who is a personal trainer who wants to train
as a coach so that they can offer private coaching is unlikely to be suitable for this program.

We are holding a 'New to Triathlon' training morning on the 26 January in the Pheonix Park. In
conjunction with this we're looking for around 8 potential trainee coaches from the Dublin area to participate in the morning.

There are also other opportunities around the country at other training events for
further coach development e.g.  we have a women's training weekend in Nenagh on February 9 and 10. We hope to hold a coach development day on the 8 February for coaches helping with the weekend.

We invite clubs to put forward individuals (up to four), for consideration for this program. At least one of these should be female. Please email
coaching@triathlonireland.com with contact details and a short paragraph written by each person on themselves and what they feel they'd be able to contribute as a coach. Please would you also indicate if they'd be interested in coming along for the morning of the 26 January to assist with the 'New to Triathlon' session. We encourage clubs to ask around their club and advertise on club websites for suitable individuals.

    Kind regards

    Jag Gunawardana

    President, Triathlon Ireland

    Technical Delegates Wanted

Triathlon Ireland are providing training for Technical Delegates (TD's). Each club that runs a race must have at least 2 race officials per club, if you run 2 races then you must have 4 race officials per club and so on...

Training is to be provided in every province during February and March and Triathlon Ireland are looking for 2 new volunteers per club to be trained up as Technical Delegates.

David & Celene Sands were trained up as TD's in 2007 and David was the TD for Lough Key and it was an enjoyable experience to be involved at that level.

TD's and referees are volunteers and give their time and support of races of which there are nearly 100 in the 2008 calender and to keep things fair, each club must do its bit by supplying TD's/Referees for races other than their own.

For anyone who is interested please email Triathlon Ireland before 26th January on administration@triathlonireland.com with the title Race Officials. If you are interested and would like to discuss it further then contact David Sands on 0860618271.
