    Programme of interest
For anyone engaged in endurance sports, the following programme gives an insight into the dedication and training needed. It was broadcast on Channel 4 a few weeks ago but is available for a limited time on their online player at http://www.channel4.com/programmes/running-to-the-limits/4od#3018091 . It is good that it has a realistic non-Hollywood type ending. It might be of more interest than Willy Wonka's Chocolate factory (again)!

    Triathlon Ireland eBulletin – 21/12/09
As part of the continuing developments within Triathlon Ireland, we are pleased to announce that the appointment of the organisation’s first ever Chief Executive Officer has been finalised. This recruitment process has taken several months and has involved a number of parties who brought their expertise to the table.

The short listing and interview panel consisted of Marie Ahern from the Irish Sports Council, Norma Bowman from SportNI, former TI President Hugh McAtamney representing the wider membership and myself representing the board. We were also able to call upon specific HR and legal advice from the sports councils. My thanks go out to all those who assisted.

The successful candidate is Mr. Matt McKerrow, who will join us from the Australian Sports Commission where he was employed as a senior consultant within their Innovation and Best Practice Department. His role there involved providing advice and support to a wide range of governing bodies, including Triathlon Australia. This broad spectrum of knowledge will now be applied within TI as we move towards a more professional structure suitable for a modern NGB.

Matt will start with us as soon as the relevant paperwork is completed and will hopefully be in post by the AGM on 30th January. He will have responsibility for the day to day running of the organisation and will manage the existing staff. The CEO will report to the board which will retain responsibility for the strategic direction that is to be followed.

The board itself has seen a number of changes recently and we can welcome Matt Coughlan on board as Treasurer, Eidin Christie as a Munster representative and Tommy Linton as the Ulster rep. Eidin and Tommy are replacing Eamonn Horgan and Oliver Harkin who have ‘served their time’. And after several years in the post, Jag Gunawardana has decided to stand down as President. A replacement will not be co-opted as we feel that this post-holder should always be elected by the membership.

Jag has overseen some significant changes within Triathlon Ireland during these years and will continue to provide assistance as required. He has dedicated many long hours during this transition period and has worked tirelessly for the good of our sport. Jag has recently been prioritising his TI involvement, to the detriment of other projects which he wishes to pursue. We wish him every success as he now takes up another challenge.

Our thanks go out to Jag, Eamonn, Oliver and all the other members who have previously served on the board. Their involvement has been critical in making triathlon the fastest growing sport in Ireland. With a professional structure in place handling the daily workload, the board will now be able to concentrate on ensuring that strategic goals are set that reflect the wishes and needs of the membership.

As mentioned above, the 2010 AGM will be held on Saturday 30th January. The meeting will start at 11:00am in Jury’s Inn, Custom House Quay, Dublin. Please regard this as official notice. A call for motions and nominations for executive board positions will be published on the website over the coming days and a comprehensive agenda and AGM booklet will be made available several days prior to the meeting. Any provincial representatives who have been previously co-opted onto the board will also seek ratification by the members. This will ensure that the board carries a strong mandate and is representative of the membership.

Following the AGM, we will be hosting the Annual Awards Dinner. This black tie affair will be an opportunity to dump the lycra and slip into something more formal. A chance to swap bike bottle for beer bottle but hopefully we’ll not all need to reach for a Kinetica recovery drink next morning. On a more serious note it is an occasion when so many of our age-groupers can take centre stage after their exploits during the 2009 National Series and National Championship races. They have worked hard and deserve credit for their achievements. Tickets will be available soon, again through the TI website.

As 2009 now draws to a close, on behalf of the board and staff of Triathlon Ireland, I would like to wish you a very Happy Christmas and a safe and enjoyable New Year. See you on a start line in 2010!!

    Yours in Sport

    Connemara Adventure Challenge
Gaelforce West is the largest one day adventure race of its kind in the world. It is in its fifth year year in 2010 with last year seeing 2500 competitors taking part. This year we are open to 3000 competitors. The race is a multi-sport adventure race involving cycling, running, hiking and kayaking. The course of approximately 65km stretches from the stunning Glassilaun beach to Westport. En route there are some significant obstacles to cross, including Killary Harbour and the famous holy mountain of Croagh Patrick. The event is designed for solo competitors, but you can run it with a buddy or training partner.
This years event takes place on the 21st of August 2010 and costs €85 per person. We sold out mid July last year so make sure to get in early this year.

This year we are bringing you a brand new race – Connemara Adventure Challenge. It will take the format of Gaelforce West with 3 disciplines; trail/mountain running (walking and jogging also accepted!), Kayaking and cycling. The Connemara Adventure Challenge is almost half the distances of Gaelforce West at approx 26km in total and it is open to racers of all levels. It will take place amongst the most amazing scenery of Killary fjord and the spectacular Connemara. This area of the country is stunning, rugged and provides the perfect playground for an adventure race.

The race will run on the 8th May and costs €65 per person.

We will also be bringing you the return on our 24hr bike races which we hope run on the 19th June. We are just finalising details on this event so keep an eye on the website.

    Bikes for Sale

    Hi Guys,

I received the following from Eoin McKenna a Triathlete in Dublin.

I have a couple of Tribikes for sale and I thought I'd send your club a mail to see if anyone would be interested. Just thought you may know someone in your club that may be looking for a bike. I have two for sale, one is a Kestrel Airfoil and the other is Quintana Roo Caliente. There's some details below:

The Kestrel Airfoil has Spinergy RevX wheels and a set of HED race wheels with it. The HED wheels are hardly used, they're actually about 2K new. It has an extra small frame so it takes 650 wheels. Most all the parts are carbon, FSA carbon crankset, carbon tribars, carbon bottle cage, carbon seatpost and an arione carbon tri saddle. It also has a durace groupset with zero gravity brakes. These are the best breaks you can buy. It does however need a service and one of the Spinergy wheel needs a bit of repair. The setup cost €5500 new with the spinergy wheels, plus about another €2000 for the HED race wheels. Ill let the whoel lot go for €2500.

The Quintana Roo is €2000, there's a bike case with that for free. There's only about 300 miles on this. Its brand new. The Quintana is a 54 i think, Ill check it if you need. I'm 5 10 and it fits me pretty good. Its got an FSA carbon crank, full carbpon tribars, integrated carbon seatpost and has an arion carbon tri saddle as well. It also has durace. This bike is nearly new. It cost €4500, ill let it go for €2000.

Anyone who is interested can call me or drop me an email

    Many thanks
    Eoin McKenna (eoinhmckenna@gmail.com)
I have the photo's and a mobile number if anyone is interested I'll email them onto you (david.sands@hse.ie).
    David.

    My Dublin marathon experience

We left our hotel at 7am,felt ok didnt sleep very well, had a light breakfast and made our way to start area. It was a beautiful autumn morning ,it felt good to be alive and well. It was  just over an hour to start time, you could get the sence of excitement and the smell of deep heat.

It was time to get changed for battle ahead, I done my warm up routine, kissed my wife Maggie and son Jake, they both wished me good luck, Maggie had tears in her eyes. I looked at my watch 2 mins to start. I felt good, then we were off.....

The miles came and went, I was passing a lot of people at the early stages just to get through the field, I was thinking was I pushing myself to hard, I wanted to get the miles behind me. Everyone has their own pace, no matter what advice you get you still want to push yourself to the max,. I remember running around Phoenix Park..where else would you want to be, on this Autumn Day, my friend mick came to mind, I had asked him once to do a marathon with me when he got better, but alas it was not to be, the people you love and respect are with you always, if they could show themselves they would, they are very close, 'did you ever look over your shoulder and feel someone is there' as our Lord said 'The Kingdom of God is very close'.

Micks spirit is with all who knew him.  10 miles came I felt good, 13 miles came and I looked at my watch 96 minutes, I was 'Bombing'to use a phrase from Bernard...maybe I had gone to fast, to soon, getting doubts but still ok.. 15 miles came the pace had dropped but still ok, 18 miles came and didnt feel to good, I knew I was in trouble,.(my training had gone ok the max I has done was 20 miles ,I should have done the 22 miles at least). At 19 miles I had to stop I remember saying "fuck it" this is punishment, what was I at,I could be home on this Bank holiday Monday having a fry-up, I had to get out of this negative mood, I took some sports beans and cycle shot's, and some water and started of again. I got to 21 miles, the wheels were starting to fall off, felt bad, depressed I wanted to crawl away and lie down, all my early work was disapearing fast, my mind and body were turning against me. I had to keep going, walk run or crawl,I was going to get that medal no matter what.

I reached 23 miles, I stopped again, I walked for a few minutes, I thought if I had a pee I might feel better, my bladder was full, I just went along a wall, loads of people around, I was in such discomfort I did'nt care, 'marathons are a real test of character, it shows the person you are..their is no hiding place.

I wanted to finish strong ,now I just wanted to finish....The people were chearing, urging everyone, to keep going, they were fantastic. This woman came over to me, and gave me jelly babies, she could see I was in trouble...She put her hand on my shoulder, and said "dont give up keep going you are nearly there". Remember earlier, what I said  ..people are with you always....I looked at her and thanked her, Its amazing what a few words of encouragment can do.

I started on my way again,I ran, I walked ,I stumbled, I just wanted it all to end. My emotions were running high, I couldnt control them, I looked at my watch 3 hrs.15 min, I couldnt think had I passed 24 miles, what a relief 25 miles, couldnt get enough water, I had 3 bottles, I kept gulping. I seen a sign 800 mts to finish, looked at my watch 3.30 I thought to myself I want to beat 3-40.

I started to pick up some sort of pace, I seen the finish line, my emotions were all over the place. The people who have gone to their resting place, were in my thoughts my mother, my brother Tom, and Martin Joseph, and Mick, people who encouraged me, I hope I done them proud on this day.

The finish line came and went 3-37, I was shattered, but happy and tearful, because on this day I had given it every ounce of effort I possibly could. I hav'nt cheated ,"not something a certain Thiery Henry "can say. Its important in life to be the best you can be, and above all to have honour.

I got my medal, kissed it,and lay down beside all the other 'gladiatiors'who gave it all in the battle over mind and body....'Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but rising everytime we fall'.

    Gerry

Congrats to Deirdre and Michelle on their fantastic achievements.

    Triathlon Ireland eBulletin – 21/11/09
Winter may have taken a firm grip across the country and floods may have played havoc with your biking plans this weekend, but the work has been continuing within Triathlon Ireland. The provisional race calendar for 2010 has been published on the website, although changes will continue to be made for several weeks yet. The final calendar will be confirmed around the turn of the year. A number of new events have been included and these will require additional support from TI officials as they prepare for their inaugural event. We extend a welcome to the new races and wish all race organisers success for 2010.

One of the administrative successes of 2009 has been the timely return of paperwork, results and One Day Licence money from the vast majority of events. Our thanks go to all those who assisted. I know it can be a pain at times when you’re queuing to register rather than spending time posing with your new bike in transition, but these ‘Sign On’ sheets are critical for your safety when racing. They help to ensure that insurance regulations are met and allow the Technical Official and Referee to issue a race permit, confident that the organiser has complied with safety guidelines. Your safety when racing is of paramount importance.

There are a tiny number of events who have not played ball and have withheld paperwork or ODL money. These races will not be sanctioned by Triathlon Ireland until they comply with regulations. They will not have approved safety plans or be insured by us and competitors may want to check the level of any alternative cover being offered. Your views on this matter are most welcome.

Membership for 2010 is available through the website, and makes a perfect Christmas present for someone! Who said romance is dead??

The last few weeks have witnessed two very different events being held by TI. The latest Talent ID day was held at the end of October and incorporated re-testing of those juniors who are already on the program. It was great to see a dedicated team of coaches, working under the direction of Chris Jones, put a large group of young athletes through their paces. Following the swim time trial, athletes and parents were given a presentation on the realities of performance sport. No punches were pulled and all present were given an insight to the sacrifices required to reach the pinnacle in sport. The current junior squad members were kitted out in TI gear, presenting a very professional image. We’ll continue to keep tabs on the development of this squad during 2010.

The second event was classroom based; well lecture theatre actually, in UCD as the National Coaching Conference took place. Over sixty members signed on for an enlightening day with some dynamic speakers. First up was Tristan Collins from Performance Impact who talked about developing and managing a coaching team. We’d all like to call upon the best physios, nutritionists, lunch makers, bag carriers etc, but Tristan emphasised the need to identify specific requirements and address them accordingly using available resources. As a coach, control the resources and don’t let them control you.

The middle part of the day gave an insight to the specialist assistance which is available and may be called upon. For the vast majority of us, significant improvements can be made pretty easily. Work on body position in the water and stop trying to beat it up! Lose a few kilos and you’ll go faster on the bike. Exercise consistently and steadily, stay injury free and your running will improve. Add that to a healthier diet with more sleep, knock the booze on the head and hey presto – we’ve all improved. But still, most of us tend to operate at about 60-70% of potential.

Elite athletes have already made these lifestyle changes and show incredible dedication. They may be operating at 95% of potential and find it difficult to squeeze out that extra few percent which can make such a difference. This is when the coach draws upon specialist services such as those provided to Triathlon Ireland by the Sports Institute of Northern Ireland. Presentations were made by Michael Johnson and Declan Gamble, Head of Strength & Conditioning and Physiology respectively. The two guys showed how immensely technical things can get. It was an eye opener, but it has hopefully sparked an interest in those present. Coaching courses will be organised during 2010, but in the meantime, the advice was to get active in coaching and gain experience from those around you.

The last speaker was Darren Smith, the Australian coach of a number of top international triathletes including Lisa Norden and Daniela Ryf. Darren outlined how a coach needs to create a suitable environment for an athlete to prosper and how that environment will differ from one person to the next. This can be witnessed at just about every club training session across the country. It is the coach’s impossible job - to keep all of the people happy, all of the time, while still improving performance. Tough one. On behalf of TI, Chris Jones thanked all the speakers and those in attendance.

Congratulations go to all the Irish athletes who competed in the recent Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Florida. Pride of place goes to Olympian’s Dessie McHenry who ran a 1:33 half marathon to make up a five minute deficit and win his age group. We’ll have at least one more bulletin circulated before Christmas but in the meantime, stay safe on the roads.

    Intensive swim coaching
An e-mail rec'd for those looking for swim training
    A chara
I have  booked the experts from swim for tri for an intense swimming coaching workshop for the weekend of November 28th/29th The head coach is a guy called Dan Bullock (regular contributor to swim articles in 220 mag) and he has a sub 16 minute  1500meter to his name. I have  attended the worshop in the past and found it excellent.  I really need to know who is interested ? Pass the word around to non club members or the swimming club or anyone who wants to come.

The cost is €185 for the Saturday and the Sunday. Look on their website and see the savings compared to the Dublin  or uk workshops. They charge £230. I have names from 11 Sligo tri club members. So I am opening it to other clubs that might be interested. I will take the names of the first few people that e mail. I will need full payment ASAP. So can people please forward there cheques or bring cash to swimming session on Friday nights. I need all the money by the 21st of November as the invoice has being raised and has to be paid in advance of them coming.  No Payment on the day (Sorry).

    The venue is Avena Leisure

This session is for swimmers of all abilities. There is no minimum or maximum swim ability requirement. From the novice transitioning from breaststroke to freestyle for their first Sprint Tri to IronMen looking to break 50 minutes for the 3.8km swim.  These intensive classes are ideal for those needing a major stroke overhaul.

These sessions are not yardage based. Emphasis is on performing the drills correctly with plenty of recovery time. We recommend that you take a rest day on the Friday before the workshop so that you are fresh to fully focus on the drills we ask you to perform. The day will be tiring mentally as much as physically.

By the end of the workshop you should feel stronger and more relaxed in the water, leaving with a greater understanding of your stroke and what you need to do to continue improving. Our expert coaches will provide you with ample feedback and drills recommendations to help get your swimming on track for a successful season of swimming and racing.

    Triathlon Ireland eBulletin – 11/10/09
Although the domestic race season may be over, Irish athletes have continued to head abroad in search of competition and a little autumn sunshine. Last weekend I had the pleasure of joining nearly thirty TI members at the Challenge Barcelona event on the Costa Brava. Once again this group represented a cross section of our membership – from those chasing podium places in their age group to those who merely wanted to enjoy a race and complete the distance. As with our own events, this was a triathlon catering for all levels of ability.

Over the last decade I have found that Irish athletes usually receive a fantastic welcome when racing abroad and it is something that can be recommended to all our members. As with all travel it opens our eyes to other cultures and their particular ways of doing things. It provides a different challenge and often an enhanced level of competition. This is especially true of championship events at both European and World level. Next year we will welcome the European Championships to Athlone, where a huge number of our athletes will compete. Hopefully these numbers will stay high and Triathlon Ireland will have large teams heading abroad on a regular basis to the ITU/ETU events to which we are affiliated.

Speaking with the organiser of the 2010 European Long Distance Championship, he was very keen to welcome Irish athletes to Vitoria-Gasteiz in the heart of the Basque country. This was probably as a result of the noise and atmosphere being generated by the supporters of the Irish competitors during and after the race! Like the athletes themselves, they were a credit to our association with their good natured support for all those taking part.

During the race itself, it was always pleasing to receive encouragement from other Irish competitors. I even had a strange accent shouting ‘Come on Ireland!’ before a particular Irish Spaniard flew past on his bike. It was only the Wheelworx kit that identified Fernando Fuentes as he disappeared up the road.

However, one sour note was highlighted when Joyce Wolfe overtook me (seems to be a common theme here – must remember to do more biking). As she edged away there were three male competitors and a female professional sitting on her wheel. They remained in my sight for quite some time and made no attempt to pass, happy to draft behind. Call it what you will, but it’s plain old cheating in my book. Joyce had the last laugh though with a fantastic first place in her age group and fourteenth overall.

Draft busters were present on the course but they were not stopping cyclists to apply penalties. Cards were being shown and the athlete then had to stop in the next penalty box. While this can be frustrating when cheats seem to be getting away with drafting, safety must be considered. It is not always safe to stop cyclists during the race and the penalty may have to be applied at a later stage. As competitors, there may be times when we just have to remain calm and trust the officials. If we are to stamp out drafting in our domestic events, athletes must take responsibility for their own actions. It’s not big and it’s not clever – drafting just proves that you’re a cheat.

Another way to help make our events fairer and safer is to increase the number of officials that we have available. Triathlon Ireland are always looking for volunteers to train as Technical Delegates and Race Referees. These people are essential in providing quality races throughout the year. Keep an eye on the website for the next course being organised in your area, or drop me an email and we’ll contact you with course dates as they become known.

Over the winter, we will continue to provide opportunities for the development of our members. These include the Women’s Long Distance Camp on 1st November and the National Coaching Conference on the 14th November. Full details can be found on the website.

Please also note that the latest talent identification day is being held in Dublin on 31st October. This is primarily aimed at those between the ages of 13 and 23 but older athletes are also welcome. The day consists of separate swim and run time trials which are marked against an internationally recognised matrix in order to attain an overall score. Further information and an idea of the required times are on the website at http://www.triathlonireland.com/article.php?story=20090924141336519.

Enjoy your down time, relax and have that second Jaffa Cake before putting your plans together for 2010.

    Triathlon Ireland eBulletin – 23/09/09

Welcome to our latest update. This time around, I’m taking the lazy option and providing you with an update straight from the TI office in Kilmacanogue. Each Friday, Amanda provides the board with some details of the work carried out that week. As you’ll see from the report below, a lot of effort goes in behind the scenes. This is a typical week at headquarters:

    1. Membership 2010:  Mary and I were testing the 2010 membership system yesterday and I'm pleased to say we're almost ready to open it up. We just have a few updates to make and hopefully, it will open in the next week.

    2.  Race admin: Still chasing outstanding money from races, and it is constantly trickling in, so we're not going too badly on that front.

    3. Race results: Now that we've had our last NS race for this year, I will be updating the NS rankings on Monday and we should have all NS rankings finalised by mid October. The jerseys which went to all age group winners each month have been a hit. A lot of the winners have contacted me when they received their jersey and thanked us for them. I think they were a great idea. Maybe next year, we should look into Eamonn's idea of a gilet for the winners - something a bit different to this year.

    4. Race equipment: The renting out of the Leinster race equipment hasn't run as smoothly as we hoped. It turns out that the person who was checking the equipment after each race, wasn't checking the equipment off an updated inventory I sent them in July, and an ocean buoy and water boom have gone
missing. We can't track which race it was and of course, after asking the race organisers, they all say they returned all equipment. Jag is looking into how we handle this for next year.

    5. Disciplinary hearing: We are now starting a disciplinary hearing between
(text removed for confidentiality purposes) and (text removed for confidentiality purposes). At this stage, Jag has spoken to both parties and I'm preparing letters to go out to them both next week.

    6. Junior Squad training camp: There is another camp at the end of October which will run into the next Talent ID day on 31st Oct in Dublin. After the Talent ID day, we will reconfirm the members of the Junior Squad.

    7. Dev Squad training camp: The next training camp for the Dev Squad will be in Spain at the end of Nov/early Dec. At this stage, it looks like there will be about 10 athletes and 3 coaches/support staff going over.

    8. Talent ID Day: Mary has been working on the Talent ID day in Dublin on 31st Oct and has everything under control.

    9. Coaching conference: The coaching conference being held in Dublin is arranged and up on the website. After the first day, we had around 10 people signed up. From the enquiries Mary and I have had through emails/calls, we should have a good turnout.

    10. Office furniture: and finally, Mary had a friend whose office is closing down and they have kindly given us 2 x 6ft tall cupboards and 2 smaller ones for free. They are really nice timber ones. We picked the cupboards up today and the office is looking a lot tidier with all the kit stored in them.

I didn't get time to sit down with Mary this afternoon and get an update on what she's been up to this week, but I think a lot of it has been spent on putting together profiles of our elite athletes. The profiles look really professional and are now at the printers being printed in colour on good quality paper. This will be great to use for prospective sponsorship etc.

Add in the constant stream of phone calls and correspondence and you have a busy week at HQ. Hopefully this helps to provide an insight into what has made triathlon Ireland’s fastest growing sport. Although we have make great strides this year at junior, elite and age group levels, the work will continue over the winter in preparation for your season in 2010. Training may be winding down but the work goes on.

Keep an eye on the website for details of how to book your place at the coaching conference and the long distance seminars planned for the new year.

    Triathlon Ireland eBulletin – 14/09/09
Welcome to the first of our eBulletins which are intended to keep the wider membership better informed of what actually takes place within Triathlon Ireland. This method of communication was suggested back in February at the AGM and at last we are able to fulfil a promise. My apologies for the delay, but a simple lack of time has been the reason. Which brings me nicely onto the main theme of this particular missive.

Triathlon has been experiencing incredible changes across the country over the last few years, with more races than ever before and an ever growing number of participants. To date, your sport has been organised at national level by a very small team of volunteers and just the over worked Amanda running the office. Yet members of TI expect, quite rightly, for races to be insured and sanctioned with proper officials in place, race results to be made available within hours of their finish, membership queries to be answered, National Series points to be awarded, international selections to be made, coaches to be trained, child protection policies to be put in place, elite athletes to be identified and nurtured etc. etc.. This is hard bloody work.

But we’re hopefully seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Triathlon is now a sport which is recognised and funded by the sports councils on both sides of the border. This funding is allowing us to put in place a professional structure, in line with other Olympic sports. But funding also brings responsibility, and we are expected to increase the accessibility of the sport and involve more women, juniors and those with disabilities at all levels, from club to international. Two important steps in this process are the appointments of a Performance Director (P/T) and a Chief Executive Officer. Interviews have already taken place for the Performance Director post and short listing is under way for the CEO role.

As a funded sport, all appointments are overseen by both the Irish Sports Council and SportNI. Representatives of both bodies approve all job specifications and sit on interview panels. Their HR guidance is invaluable.

Hopefully this has provided a little insight into the workings of Triathlon Ireland. I will endeavour to supply regular eBulletins over the coming weeks and months, so if there are any particular topics you would like covered, drop me an email and I’ll try to oblige.

    Triathlon Stars of the Future
On Sunday 13th Sept., Sarah and Rebecca Donnelly took part in the children's triathlon in Loughrea. The event consisted of a 150m lake swim, a 2 km cycle and a 1 km run. All competitors were chip timed which added to the competitiveness of the event. Sarah had a fantastic swim and was first out of the water. She continued the race with an excellent performance in the cycle and the run to come fourth overall in her age group. Following on from her sister’s superb result, Rebecca put in a top class performance in all three events and was duly rewarded with first place in her age group. A fantastic performance by both girls. Well done from everyone at Liquid Motion. Pictures to follow....

    Club champioships 2009

The follpsing is an e-mail received from TI, if everyone could read and check their membership that would be great.

    Thanks, Sean

Triathlon Ireland are currently finalising the Club Championships and would
ask that you please ask your club members to make sure that they have
updated their membership details on our membership system to include their
club name.  To do this, they simply need to go to 'membership' on the main
menu of our home page and then select 'update details'.  Once they have
logged in, they can check that their club name is included.   If it isn't,
they can then add their club.

At the moment it is difficult for us to calculate the club championships as
many members have not updated their club name.

Can you please ask all club members to update their club details by next
Thursday 17th September  as we will be finalising the club championships
    next Friday 18th September.

    Thanks in advance,
    Triathlon Ireland

    Lough Key Training

A training session has been organised with a eye on the upcoming Lough Key Triathlon which takes place next weekend.

I am aware that a number of club members are taking part so I have decided that a lake swim would be benifical. The reason being that there is definitely a difference between swimming in the sea and in a lake. I would recommend the lake swim to anyone who is taking part in Lough Key.

The swim will take place in Lough Conn at the Gortnor Abbey Pier at 7pm and in keeping with tradition there will be a 5K run afterwards so make sure to bring the runners.

As usual this training session is open to all members and anyone who takes part does so at their own risk.

Triathlon Chonemara - what a course

This weekend saw 4 Club members participate in Triathlon Chonemara at Cill Chiarain, Carna, Galway. This is an Olympic  Distance race which is part of this years National Series.  The weather was mild and the rain held off.  There was a noticible breeze from the south (which played its part on the bike).

The swim was in the sea with all 186 competitors off in one wave in a clockwise circuit from the pier around 3 buoys.  We all got through it OK.   Then onto the bikes.  The first watch out here is the climb immediately out of transition onto the main road.  It is around 200 metres and it is tough.  The bike is an anti-clockwise loop. The first 15km is OK then there is a left hand turn onto a 5km stretch across a bog road (great scenery if you had the time). Then there is another left and onto the road back past Carna and into Cill Chiarain.  The southerly breeze played its part for the last half of the bike (straight into our face), and there are plenty nasty little climbs.  However, its the run that takes the biscuit on this one.  Its straight up hill out of transition for 2.5km.  Then down a dip, then back up hill, down a dip, turn around a bollard and do it all again.  Agony.

We all got through it safely.  Well done Eamonn Kennedy who completed his first Olympic distance race.  Eamon reckons he could have picked an easier one!  I don't think he could have picked a harder one. Well done Declan Cooke who has now completed two Olympic events in two weeks.  Meanwhile myself and Michael Forde had our usual race.  Well done Michael. Both Michael and myself managed to come third in our respective age groups.

The event was really well organised by Galway Triathlon Club (www.galwaytriathlonclub.com) with a Bar-B-Q afterwards outside the local shop (and the rain continued to stay away).  Great job Brian Galvin as TI Technical Delegate.

If you are going to give this race a go next year my advice is do lots of hill running. I mean hills like the Windy Gap in Lough Talt.  Needless to say I didnt.

    Quelle Challenge Roth Ironman

On deciding to enter the Roth ironman, I arrived in Roth via Munich three days before the race. We based ourselves in the city of Nurnberg which is about 22km from the race site. On visiting the race venue you knew a big experience was on hand. The expo centre had over 100 stalls with thousands of people milling around bikes.compression stockings,tri-suits and swim gear. The athmosphere was electric with the likes of Chrissie Wellington and Norman Stadlier happily mixing with the general public.

The unusual thing about Roth is that the run starts at a different point from where the bike starts so that meant two different drop off points for run gear and bike gear. Once that was out of the way it was just a case of waiting for the big morning.

We arrived on the morning of the race at the swim site which is situated at the Main-Donau canal, there were over 20,000 people at the start and to arrive early was very important. the elite sub 9hr category started at 6.30amand again something new to me was the wave start of different groups. My group was scheduled to go at 7.25am so I was already in race mode and a little nervous by 7am. At 7.20am we were called to start so I decided to drop my crocs off at my bike stand, on running back to the start disaster struck. As I came around a corner I stubbed my toes on a piece of concrete, looking down and seeing my little toe at right angles to my foot I knew I was in trouble. My wave had just started into the water and I found myself in a type of dream world. I pulled my little toe back into place and hobbled to the start only to confronted by a steward telling me that I had missed my wave, again instinct took over and I rushed passed him dived into the water and started swimming like a mother f======.

The conditions in the canal were perfect ,calm, clean and well marked. My mind at this stage was very confused as I couldnt believe what had happened to me,as well as that I thought I could be disqualified for having disobeyed a steward. I decided to finish the swim and see how I felt . I kept focus on the finish line and came out of the water in 1 hr 14mins, I didnt know this at the time. Just as I was coming out of the water a fellow competitior hit me on my damaged foot. I can only describe the pain and roar I let under water as scary.

In the changing tent I decided to put on my bike gear and see what would happen, however due to the swelling on my foot it wouldnt go into the shoe, looking around I felt quite desperate and called over a medic who did a fantastic job of strapping my toes,I then decided to take out my insole of the shoe and  my foot fitted.

The pain subsided slightly as I started on the bike course and what a course. The roads were  smooth, and fast, they were thronged with spectators all going bananas. The Solarerberg hill is about 15km into the cycle and what an experience, about 2km long and over 10,000 peolpe linining the side of the hill you literally were swept up the hill. Greding hill was a little different, a bit like the Windy Gap but longer and needed full concentration. The first loop I really enjoyed , the second loop was a little harder as the wind picked up.The aid stations were great as they had all the nutrition you required so it meant you didnt have to carry much.

Coming near the end of the cycle, my legs felt good but my back and neck were sore and the thoughts of the run and how I would cope were weighing on my mind.I finished the cycle in 6hrs 6 mins

In the run transition area again I approched a medic who restrapped my foot, at this stage the brusing and swelling were very obvious, I gently put my runners on and headed out on to the run course. I was in trouble from the start as I could put no pressure on the front of my foot, I kept shuffling and hobbling until eventually 4km into the run I met up with my brother, I told him I did'nt think I could finish. It was at this point I was faced with the true reality. He took me to one side and explained in no uncertain terms that if I had to crawl I had to finish. I took some pain killers and headed into the great unknown ,the run course is amazing as it brings you through forests along the canal and through little villages. I kept urging myself on and eventually got to 25km.At this point a french competitor called Francois passed me with his arm in a sling, and we got talking and it turnd out that he had broke it near the end of the cycle in a fall. Well that was it for me " no surrender". I eventually got to the end, the hardest thing about the last 10km wasnt the foot but the continous cramping which were the worst I ever experienced, I had forgot to bring my electrolyte tabs on the run course which was a big mistake. I finished the run in4hrs 50mins.

At the end when I seen I had completed the Ironman in 12hrs 32mins I was emotionally overcome, I went to a quite place and had a little sniffle.

On reflection my experience in Germany were great ,the people , the country, the organization of the event were all fantastic. Its a race which would suit anyone thinking of giving ironman a go.

A BIG THANKS TO ALL THE LIQUID MOTION CREW WHO HELPED ME THIS YEAR AND A SPECIAL THANKS TO PAUL AND SIMON WHO HAD TO LISTEN TO ME ALL YEAR.

    Yours in sport,

    James Geraghty

p.s . During the hardest parts of the race when I was struggling an image of my old friend Mick lyons kept popping into my head. I suspect he would have been pleased.

Great success for Liquid Motion at Triathlone 2009

Last Saturday saw the fourth running of Triathlone.  We had a good turnout from Liquid Motion with as usual some outstanding results.

In the Olympic Distance event Marcus Allen and Gerry Devaney put in excellent performances to win 1st place in their respective age groups.

In the Sprint Distance event there were several highlights:

James Brady had an outstanding 2nd place finish in the Junior age group followed in 3rd place by David Devaney with Aaron Donnelly and Daniel Devaney also putting in great times.  It is tremendous to see juniors in the Club, all enjoying their racing, and all performing at such a high standard.

Gareth McCormack finished fourth overall in his age group and has now secured a coveted automatic entry into the 2010 European Championships in Athlone.  Paul Dunne is back in Triathlon with a bang and with his performance will have hopefully secured his place in the 2010 European Championships. Stephen Donnelly was unlucky with bike mechanical problems.  David Donnelly put in a great performance. Mary Dunne was (for the second time this year) unfortunate in losing her timing chip while Michelle Reynolds did really well in the Try event.

As for me.  Well I gave it a go!

Well done to everyone.  Next event for some is this Saturdays Connemara Triathlon while there should be a great turnout on Sunday for the Crossmolina Aquathon.

We are meeting at Ballina Sports Center at 6pm on Friday 10th July.  We are then going to organise a crew to lay out transition while we have our team running the Registration which will open from 7pm.  In addition, we need Marshals to support each of the critical elements of the race on Saturday 11th.  We will be meeting at 7am on Saturday in Transition Area, where we will ensure Marshals are assigned to the Chief Marshals for each stage of the race (Swim, Bike, Run, Transition, de-mobilisation).

We are receiving wonderful support from throughout the community for our Triathlon.  Let's ensure that we can match the support which we are being given.

    Thanks as always

    Mullaghmore training weekend
    HI everyone

Just a note about stephan. I have asked himself and Brian Jenkins to come to the north west to do a training weekend. These two lads as far as i am concerned are the future of triathlon in Ireland. They are all about the sport and the people who enjoy it and work hard at it.

I feel it would focus people on not over training and make your sessions work better for you no matter what your time scale.

It would be great if you could distribute the enclosed poster to your club members.

    regards

    The last sea swim

Today (Monday the 29th) will we have the last of the club sea swims as we willl focus on the swim for the Salmon Run in the river.

A practice swim will be aranged before the race on Saturday the 11th. However as of yet no date or time has been decided as we try and negiotate tides and a time that might suit. Once a decision has been made the details will be place on the web site for all to see.

Hopefully we will recommence the sea swims in mid to late August for club members who are taking part in Blacksod Point or Kenmare in September.

Best of luck to the Donnelly brothers.

On the behalf of the whole club I would like to wish Stephen and David every success in overcoming the gruling challenge of UK IRONMAN 70.3 this Sunday (14th June). No doubt all the hard training over the past few months will pay off. This is a huge undertaking as it is regarded as particularly challenging Half Ironman.

The UK IRONMAN 70.3 Triathlon consists of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and 13.1 mile run. Athletes have 09hrs 30mins to complete the course and call themselves an IRONMAN. The event is one of a global series of 70.3 events run under the banner of the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC).

David and Stephen will be racing against the top triathletes in the world. The UK IRONMAN 70.3 has attracted a strong field over the years with Chris McCormack, Chrissie Wellington, Luke Bell, Bella Comerford, Stephen Bayliss, Julie Dibens, Fraser Cartmell, Catronia Morrison and Bryan Rhodes among those who have tested themselves against the course.

So best of luck again and have a safe and enjoyable race.

Sizzling Performances at Tri Athy 2009

Well done to all Club Members who participated in Tri Athy on Saturday May 30th.  The weather was fantastic with bright blue skies, a warm SE breeze, and a great atmosphere.  In the Olympic race Mary Dunne, Deirdre Lynn and myself wore the club colours.  Mary, Deirdre (and even me) all had new PBs for Olympic.  The competition was hot and everyone who was anyone in Irish Age group Triathlons was at the event.  In the Sprint event Stephen Donnelly and James Brady pushed one another hard with Eamon Kennedy putting in a great performance.  Stephen and James clocked incredible times finishing 10th and 16th overall out of over 1000 finishers in the Sprint.  The provisional results can be checked out at triathy.com.

A big note of thanks must go out to Tomas Lynn who has helped no end to raise the overall swim standard for many in the Club (at least for me) through is organising and coaching of the Winter Friday night sessions..

Looking ahead, watch out if you are considering signing up for the Caroline Kearney Memorial Triathlon.  Registration is opening on June 9th.  Check out midlandtri.com

    Open Water Swim Training

Summer has finally arrived and its time to get back in the water and  brave the elements again.

So with great pleasure we can announce that the open water swim training will be back in action in Enniscrone (pier) on Monday the 1st of June at 7:00pm and every Monday at 7:00pm for the rest of the Summer.

We try to gear the training in a way that it offers some similarities to upcoming triathlons that club members will take part in.

So for Mullaghmore we usuall train in Enniscrone, for the Salmon Run we obviously train in the River Moy and in August we tend to train at Gortnor Abbey pier (Lough Conn) for the Aquathon.

The training is for members only and caters for all stardards and abilities. However it up to everyone to be responsible for their own safety. Membership forms will be available at training.

I hope to see plenty of the faces from the friday night swims take part. I hope ye kept up the training!

Keep checking the web site for any changes in location or cancellations that might occur.

    Mullaghmore 2009

Members of  Liquid Motion will be donning the green of Ireland next year  as they produced some fantastic performances to qualify for Ireland in their respective age groups. This is a fantastic achievement for themselves and for the club.

Peter Tuothy was the first man out of the water and finished in an incredible 7th overall, closely followed by James Bradey who finished 13th and Stephen Donnelly in 20th. Other notable performers on the day were Declan Cooke, Pat Hughes and Patricia Battle who went on to produce quick times with personal bests. Huge congratulations also to Una Casserly , Shane Mulchrone, Pat Bilbow and Michele Reynolds for completing their first triathlon.

The race attracted a large number of experienced triathletes due to the fact that it was one of the qualifying races for the ITU European Championships which will take place in Athlone next year.  This makes the achievement of the Liquid Motion members who qualified even greater.

The locals who qualified for Athlone were Peter Tuohy, James Brady, Stephen Donnelly, Bernard McGuinness, Marcus Allen, Deirdre Lynn, Sharon O'Hara, Orla Donnelly and Linda Sweeney. Hopefully before the season is over more club members will have qualified and have the honour of representing your country.

This achievement highlights the progression which has occurred within the club over the past few years. The whole of Liquid Motion wishes to pass on their congratulations to everyone who got through. It is wonderful achievement.

The 2009 Triathlon Season has started

Last Sunday saw the start of the 2009 Triathlon Season with the Joey Hannon Memorial Triathlon taking place at University of Limerick.  We had great participation from the Club both in the Olympic and Sprint events.  The day was fine (if a little cool), with the first wave of the Olympic distance event away at 09:30.  Stephen Donnelly led the way for Liquid Motion with a blistering overall time of 02:20:26 (coming in 22nd overall).  Stephen was followed in by James Brady who set a great time of 02:24:49.  In all 8 club members gave the Olympic distance event a go. With 3 club members completing the Sprint event.  Well done to Tomas Lynn who came in 9th overall in the Sprint event and a special well done to Michelle Reynolds who completed her first triathlon.

Limerick Triathlon Club did a brilliant job organising this very big event with over 182 competitors completing the Olympic distance and 192 competitors completing the Sprint distance.

Well done to everyone from Liquid Motion who travelled to Limerick last weekend (Stephen Donnelly, James Brady, David Donnelly, Deirdre Lynn, Brendan Ryder, Orla Donnelly, Pat Hughes, Tomas Lynn, Michelle Reynolds, Linda Sweeney, myself).

    Mayo AC league
Mayo AC organise a road race league over distances from 5K to 10K. The races are a great opportunity to run against the best road runners in Connaught. You will also find that your PBs for these distances will improve. It is great training for the run element of the triathlon. See the attachment below for the race calendar for this year and I hope to see many of you at the races. Look out for club runs due to be organised in the near future.

    Club Member completes Boston Marathon

Congrats to Sean Gallagher who today completed the Boston Marathon in a truely impressive time of 2hr 57 mins.  Sean has been training away all Winter, putting in serious mileage, after successfully qualifying for Boston when he completed Dublin City Marathon (his first marathon!) in 2hr 59 min.  Sean reckons he was going well today until the last 3 miles.  At that pace I'm sure many of us would have run out of steam far earlier.  Sean has kindly offered to organise a run time trial session for Club members on his return to Ireland.  Keep a look out for this run session.

    Tubbercurry 10km road race

There were 103 finishers in the 36th running of the South Sligo Athletic Club St. Patrick's day 10k road race in Tubbercurry with a good Ballina representation. It was a beautiful day for the run although there was a deceptive breeze. The wind and hills combined made the first half of the race quite tough. When the terrain and breeze were favourable, energy stores were depleted. It was great to get a time for 10k posted for the first time this year and there will be further races during the year to strenghten the run part of the triathlon discipline. The Ballina/Liquid Motion finishers were as follows:

Seán Gallagher 35:54;Peter Tuohy 39:40; Stephen Donnelly 42:03; Deirdre Lynn 46:51; Alan Murphy 47:31; Michael Courell 48:43; Tom Horkan 51:56; Elizabeth Murphy 54:14

    Spring Duathlon Race 3 Report

Race 3 of our Spring Duathlon Series took place today at the Ramada between the snow showers.  Nine brave club members turned out in bitter conditions.  At 10am with snow falling it looked like we were going to have to call off the start, however a break in the weather arrived just in time for all to decide to give it a go.  From the start Sean Gallagher, Stephen Donnelly and Peter Touhy set off on a strong pace.  At T1 Sean came in first closely followed by Stephen then Peter.  Stephen then put in a blistering split on the bike and came into T2 in first.  Sean put in a great second run split to come in first closely followed by Stephen then Peter.  Well done to everyone for turning out (Deirdre L, Grace F, Sean G, Stephen D, Pat B, Ivan K, Brendan R, Peter T, Eamonn K, ).  Race 4 will take place in 2 weeks time. Results are attached below.

Spring Duathlon Series - Race One.

A beautiful sunny morning greeted the athletes taking part in Race One of the Spring Duathlon Series. Although it was crisp it was dry and no frost. A good turn out from club members to take part in the Duathlon and burn off a bit of turkey and Christmas pud. Tough as it was it will certainly stand to them come June and the Triathlon season proper.

Sean Gallagher, as expected led the pace on the first run but it was an improving James Brady who took the lead on the bike and never looked back to cross the line first to take the 10 points, with Sean coming in a close second. Once again it was great and encouraging to see so many new faces.

Race Two on 8th February. Sign on at 10am at The Ramada Hotel, Ballina. Race start at 10.30. All welcome.

    Club Meeting Sat 31st Jan

    As hopefully everyone will have seen, our Salmon Run Triathlon is now locked into this years Triathlon Ireland Calender for Saturday 11th July.  It is important that we as a Club come together to form a Committee to lead the Organisation of this years event.  I am therefore calling a meeting of all Club Members to take place in the Dock Bar at 8pm on Saturday 31st January.  I encourage everyone to attend as the success of our Triathlon depends every year on our ability to help out in the organisation.  The Agenda for the meeting will cover the following;

    1. Formation of Race Committee and appointment of race coordinator
    2. Review of minutes from our AGM and update on any actions identified
    3. Ideas discussion to see whether there any initiatives we might want to take on and any potential volunteers
