Well done to all who took part in our last club event of the year and congratulations to Gary Higgins who stormed the run to take the win in a remarkable time of 43:27.
There was a better than expected turn out on what was one of the busiest weekends of the season. With so many other events taking place over the weekend we were not sure how many would turn up. Thankfully the weather held off and seas seemed to calm just in time for the swimers.
Thanks again to all the stewards for giving up their time to help out on the day.
Results are below.

- Club BBQ
-
Next Wednesday will see the last of the Aquathons take place in Crossmolina. So as a way to finish up things we have decided to organise a club BBQ for all our members.
All members are welcome whether they have taken part in the Aquathon series or not. Members family, friends and partners are also more than welcome. The more the merrier!
Stephen and Simon have said they would bring there BBQs and we are lucky to have a Michelin star chef (Martin Rafter) who has volunteered to cook.
So if everyone brings a some food with them, (the usuall BBQ stuff) then we will have plenty share around. If people have any fold up chairs or tables I am sure they would not go to waste.

- Germany
-
I wasn’t too sure where to begin, so I suppose I’ll start at the beginning.
It was the month of February; we were down in Belleek running with David, Stephen, Paul, Robbie and Dessie. I remember upping the pace half way round and I got a pain down my right leg.
That was the start of my troubles, moving on months later after seeing chiropractors, massage etc.
I managed to control the pain with painkillers, I knew couldn’t shake it off, so I had to deal with it best I could.
On heading off to Germany I had my painkillers and my own strategy clear in my mind. I had trained hard for this, nothing was left to chance.
6 am on wet windy morning with David heading for Belmullet, we were ready for this.
Please bare with me on this; I have to tell it as it was.
If you’re ever looking for tips on travel, don’t ask myself, David or Stephen. They were totally chaotic.
After a long haul we got to our hotels, it was 10pm that night I didn’t feel well. I noticed I had a searing pain in my groin area. I thought a good night sleep is all I need.
After a disturbed night’s sleep, I woke up not feeling good, one of my testicles had swollen up during the night, and we found a doctor not far from the hotel.
He done an ultra scan and said maybe it was an infection, he gave me antibiotics and painkillers.
We got to Saturday and I didn’t feel well at all, I said to Maggie I cannot do this, I said why has the gods turned against me after a good cry and some self pity, Maggie said to me we will go to the transition and register the bike I might be better in the morning.
I want to say a big thanks to Stephen, David and Aaron, they put my bike together and offered me words of comfort.
We got to transition, registered our bikes and had a look around. The lake looked fantastic buoys you could see for miles, the whole thing was totally professional, I never been at anything like it.
Didn’t get much sleep that night, had the breakfast at 4.15 am and headed to the lake. My confidence was shook but I had to get on with it.I put on my wetsuit, wished the boys good luck and done a few warm-ups, then the referee said one minute to go.
I felt ok totally relaxed ready for the off, the swim went really well, just one kick and the lake was lovely and clean. I kept going at my own pace, I kept thinking this is it The Ironman. Got out of the swim happy enough things were ok, the moment of truth was about to come could I sit on the bike fairly comfortable. I had to make some last minute changes to my clothing tri-suit etc.
I got out of transition still wary of getting on the bike, I got on the bike, Bingo all good no pain. The bike was a joy beautiful countryside, great support all through kept taking my painkillers and salt tablets very important thanks Brian. I kept thinking about something that Patrick Clarke said Ride by Feel and that’s what I done.
Coming to the end of the bike I started thinking about the run would things be ok, I still felt ok.
Got changed, started out on the run met my family and Arron at the start gave them the thumbs up, everything going ok.
The run wasn’t pretty, stomach problems were the worst. I thought I would get a 4.15 run but not today.I found your mental attitude is really tested, I never thought about giving up but my mind would wander and I’d start to walk and start talking to someone beside me. I sometimes lost interest, I had a t-shirt with Mick and my nephew Martin on it.
I know they helped me all the way. There are some things that stand out like I remembered on the run three Germans sitting at the drink station giving out drinks, and every time I went round they would call my name “Gerard” bowed and say respect, the last time I went around I stood at the table bowed and said thank you. The support on the run was unbelievable, everybody was fantastic shouting in German, it carried you through.
I got to within 2 k of the end and my son Jake ran with me to the finish line
I got over the line in 13.53 wasn’t sure how I felt, hugged my son Jake. Got my medal and didn’t feel too bad, I felt worse after Kenmare.
Had a shower, got my massage and met up with Maggie and son David. There were a few tears and hugs, I thought I’d done it I reached the Holy Grail of triathlons. I got no complaints i played the hand i was dealt.Just a quick summary, thinking back to all that happend, the injuries, the setbacks, the chaotic travel arrangements, I'm very happy that on the day i had the strength to finish it. I was reading on the internet that a guy called Barry had problems just before the Ironman Zurich 3 weeks ago, he got infection and ended up in hospital, still brought his bike to transition but alas his bike was a lonely figure when he went to pick it up in transition a few hours after the start, Imagine how he feels.
2 weeks after doing it I'm still not right, I need to get my mo-jo back, I suppose it's time to heal the body now. Looking back I think myself and David overtrained. I would recommend do your winter base training and then a 12 week programme to suit your needs. I think we peaked in mid-June. There are so many people to thank, the pioneer of Ironman himself James. He took time out to phone us and meet us, and gave us lots of good info, especially a cup of coffee and a sticky bun on long cycles.
To Paul and Mary for the piece they gave us on cycling more, to help strengthen the legs for the marathon. To Simon for the rub downs and listening to me whinging, to Finn for her total enthusiasm, to P.Clarke for meeting with us and his advice, to M.Hopkins for the bike and all he done for us, to Bernard for the bike case, to everyone at the club for their good wishes before and after, to everyone outside the club who were wondering how much we got for the competing thank you, to my wife Maggie especially thanks for listening to my constant whinging, for all the specials dinner, for listening to my plans when she probably had no interest.
Just a quick note, I remember going up the climbs at Walhalla, there was a sign at the top “Pain is Temporary”. It may last a minute or an hour or a day or a year but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place, If I quit however it’ll last forever.Gerry

- IRONMAN REGENSBURG
-
Regensburg Germany 2010 was an experience we will never forget.
Waking up at 4am, we had breakfast got everything set up and headed down to the shuttle bus. While doing this there was groups coming from the local night club and we wished we were heading in there direction, but instead we had a long day ahead of us.The half hour bus journey brought us to the lake. There was a tense atmosphere everyone contemplating the job ahead. Arriving to the lake there was about 2000 competitors, all around us we could see very fit & lean athletes. After organising ourselves we put on our wet suits and went in for a warm up. To our surprise the lake was like a bath. We wondered would we be better off without wetsuits!!! The swim was a mass land start, so not knowing strengths of others we decided to stay close to the front.(bad idea) On the minute to go mark Stephen turned to Dave and said “ I wouldn’t be up this close in Mullaghmore”. The gun went of and it was like stepping into a boxing match. Things settled down after the 1 mile mark and we got a rhythm going,
On exiting the water it was time for the longest part of the day which was the 180k bike. the beginning of the bike course consisted of 30k of long climbs with fast decent s with 30 degree heat and slight head winds it was going to be a hard day on the bike, on the summit of Walhalla (which was a temple on top of the big climb)kids were banging drums and shouting out encouragement in there native language,
The first 80k seemed like a normal sprint distance, we were well hydrated with all the water stations on the course,
The second lap seemed harder but again the massive support got us through (as well as the 12 gels that Stephen took), for both of us the last 20k was a blur but we got through it, with Stephen with an upset stomach and Dave feeling his age the next part which was the marathon seemed next to impossible.
On the first 5k of the run we both suffered a lot of pain in our shins which we never suffered before, but once we got through the first 5k our legs found the rhythm to keep going. The run was 4 10k loops of the city of Regensburg. Cobble stoned streets were again lined with supporters, with 5 aid stations on the 10k loop, we were kept well hydrated while sponges and ice kept us cool from the 30 degree heat,Stephen: ''after the 20k mark i started getting bad stomach cramps and couldn’t take any food on, looking back maybe all them gels i took was a bad idea! so with a run/walk combination it got me to the last 8k where I finished with a nice run pace to the line''Dave: ''the 10k loops were counted by a coloured band system starting with green and finishing with the one we all remembered the pink band!! on the first lap it was so hard to see people with more than one band on, because you knew they were so much closer to the finish, a run/walk combination and the help of the aid stations got me to my final 10k where I collected my pink band and decided now it was time to enjoy what Regensburg had to offer, with the aid of mini cakes and coca cola I happily hit the finish line''
Stephen: ''thinking back if I had a better nutritional plan I would have had a more consistent race, but I think that will be put down to experience''
Dave: ''ironman triathlon is the purest form of triathlon because it brings you back to your first triathlon, which to finish is the goal.
I see myself as an average triathlete, but training with friends, it s an achievable goal! Thanks Gerry!!!! Gerry will have his account of the day up soon.
We would like to thank all the club members that wished us luck up to the event and Jimmy and Simon in Molloys for all the help and advice

- Galway Bay Swim 2010
-
A big thank you to all of you who supported me in my recent 13KM swim across Galway Bay, I finished on Saturday and here is my story.....
From Munster all the way home to Connacht….
The 24 July was a date that I had set aside since January this year, like many other Saturdays during the summer months I was giving up that weekend for sport but this event was special. Since watching the 2009 Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay swimmers finishing in Salthill one afternoon last summer, I had pretty much decided that I could possibly attempt the 13KM feat. The more I thought about it, the more I really wanted to do it and I got my name down on the start list in early 2010. Figured I better start swim training…Although I’m a triathlete, I could never call myself a swimmer. Proper swimmers are those who went training at 6am while in school and competed in galas, swim competitions etc from a young age. These are athletes who have a beautiful gliding technique, an amazing core and a fantastic fluidity in the water that I could only ever imagine possessing. Me? I only started swimming properly in 2008 when suffering with a running injury! I’ve loved the water ever since but no matter how much training I ever do; I will never match those real swimmers!
Last Saturday morning I arrived on a very lonely wild stony beach in Auginish, Co. Clare, here our 13KM swim would commence. It was a very misty, wet, grey morning which wasn’t too encouraging but I was concentrating on the positive, it wasn’t too cold! I had decided a long time ago that if I was to do the swim that it would be without a wetsuit, and I never doubted my ability to opt for my swimsuit and brave the cold Atlantic waters. As I watched about half the swimmers put their comfy wetsuits on, I did look on in envy but only for a moment, and I returned my attention to my tub of Vaseline!
After a brief (very un-glamorous) photo shoot we headed to the water, I was eager to get moving at this stage, and it was a very relaxed start. I certainly was not going to panic, I’d hours of swimming ahead of me, I figured I’d get into a nice pace and hopefully stick with it! Visibility was poor, Deer Island is about 1KM off shore, and our boats were going to pick us up there but I couldn’t see it at all so I just kept swimming. Instructions were for us to keep moving and let the boats find us; I was picked up after about 30 minutes and was quite happy to see the Mayo flag flying high on my rib. I passed through the 1 hour mark with no problems. It got a little rough the further in to bay I headed and although I was swimming strong for the next hour and 30 minutes, I think my hard work may have backfired a little!
At 2 hours 30 minutes, I could see the wide backdrop of Salthill and my boat figured that I was about 1 hour out. I was delighted at such progress but then I began to hurt a considerable amount with the more effort I put in earlier, my left shoulder had taken the stress of the waves hitting me out in the bay and began to cause trouble. My poor hips were aching from kicking hard and began to cease up when I stopped for any length of time so I had to keep swimming. Salthill was not getting any closer; I began to despair a little. Swimming towards the boat to get drinks was effort, and keeping myself upright to drink was even harder, I was sinking quickly. Put it this way, I was perfectly able to fire the water bottle right back to my boat lads at the 1 hour mark but at that stage I could hardly lift my hands up to attempt to throw it up to them.
The funny thing was that when I was swimming, I was ok, not perfect but I was much better than when I was stopped. So I figured that I had got to put my head down and somehow keep my arms moving, somehow! I eventually got word from the boat that I was 1KM out, for motivation one of the lads said, you’ve already done 12KM! That thought stuck with me as the blurry yellow image of Blackrock became clearer and with every stroke, more realistic. There were people, lots of people waiting for me and at this stage I began to smile because I knew that I would make it, with just a little more effort, I would make it. I don’t think I stopped for that last 1KM and I felt like I was powering it home. A life guard paddled out to meet me for the last 200m, I could hear those people, and I could see the steps ahead and a big Galway flag to direct me in. I thanked the lifeguard, waved to my boat crew and climbed the steps with confidence and one massive smile on my face. I glanced at my watch, 4 hours, 11 minutes, from Munster all the way home to Connacht.
The first of the many amazing swimmers made it across in 3 hours, 3 minutes with the rest of us coming across in less than 6 hours. One of the swimmers, told me that he had a heart transplant 10 years ago, what a hero? His story is certainly more impressive than mine; that is an unbelievable achievement. The 23 fantastic swimmers of 2010 were Ronan Collins, Kevin Thornton, Aimee Walsh, Alan Quaid, Alice Flood, Barry O’Neill, Cathal Codyre, Cathal Hanley, Ernesto Antonio, Fergal O’Dowd, Grainne Read, Jillian Coll, Laoise MacNamara, Matthew O’Flaherty, Martin Kenirons, Martin McCarthy, Micheal Hanley, Sarah Early, Sorcha Barry, Simon Flately, Stephen Early, and Susanna Murphy.
I would like to thank IFI Galway who generously provided my boat and a highly professional service from start to finish. I owe a big thank you to all my boat crew for their constant encouragement and undying belief – Hugh Varley, Vincent Roche, Sean Francis, Mark Francis, Loman Forde.
Most importantly I wish to express a massive thank you to every single person who donated money to ‘Cancer Care West’ which is the chosen charity for the Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim. The generosity I have witnessed over the past few weeks has been inspirational and every penny will be fully utilised to enhance the lives of those with cancer in the wider west of Ireland region. Further information available on http://www.mycharity.ie/event/sinad_roches_event/
Now I think I can finally call myself a swimmer, not a great swimmer but a swimmer none the less.

- Cycle roof rack
- Can anyone recommend what is the best roof rack to get for holding road bicycles? Any where to buy one? I don't have hatchback, so I can't use the system that hooks on the back. I have a roof rack, so thought about just getting the contraption that goes on the roof and hold the bike upright. Any advice would be much appreciated rees.qs@gmail.com Thanks.

- Powerade Salmon Run 2010
-
Fears that this year’s Powerade Salmon Run Triathlon would not take place due to the low water levels in the River Moy were put firmly in the realms of history as the race took place on one of the wettest days ever seen in Ballina.
The Powerade Salmon Run Triathlon which is now in its fifth year took place on Saturday the 10th of July. In previous years the race has basked in glorious sunshine, akin to Hawaii or Lanzarote (two famous Triathlon locations) however the conditions that faced the competitors for this year’s race were as close to monsoon conditions as we can get in this country. As one local competitor summed it up “people were worried that there would not be enough water in the Moy for the swim, we could have swam down Belleek Road at one stage!”
The race was a closely contested affair which was won by Mark Hogan from Pulse Triathlon Club (Dublin) who took the lead on the bike and held on to win in the remarkable time of 1:03:53 closely followed by Shane Scully from Nenagh Triathlon Club just 30 seconds behind with David Richardson from Limerick in third just 1 minute and 13 seconds behind the leader. The first locals home were the close group of Tom O' Dowd, Stephen Donnelly, Paul Reape and James Brady who came in 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th respectively. First in the female category was local girl Sinead Roche who races for Midland Tri Club in the terrific time of 1:15:03.
There was more local success when Stephen Donnelly, Michele Reynolds, James Brady and Deirdre Lynn won their respective age categories. So in all it was a very successful day for the local club Liquid Motion. ‘The Spirit of Triathlon Award’ which is memory of Mick Lyons one of the founding members of the club and who pioneered the sport of triathlon in Ballina was won by the popular James Geraghty for his achievements in the Ironman race in Germany last year.
However for all the rain fell it did not damper the spirits of the competitors taken part. Some of whom take part in triathlons every weekend, some who just pull the bike out of the shed come July to take part in the race and some who were taking part in their first ever triathlon. Most of athletes who took part said after the race that they really enjoyed it, in spite of the rain. As one said “you just have to accept the rain and get over it, sure when your wet your wet. I was roaring laughing at one stage, it got that bad”. This year’s race had a different course due to the revised traffic management system in place on the towns Bridges. Transition where the competitors change over from one sport to the other was located at Ballina Athletic track. The bike section was out the Killala Road with the turnaround located at the old Asahi plant. The run brought the athletes down and back through Belleek woods,
Liquid Motion Triathlon Club would like to thank all the stewards who had to suffer the torrential rain and all the sponsors who were involved in race, special mention to Ballina Beverages and Molloys Lifestyle Pharmacy. The club would also like to thank Steven Doyle and legginit.com (a new social networking fitness site) for their photos.

- Galway Bay Swim 2010
-
Hey Everyone!
It's Sinéad Roche here, most of you know me already…. But for anyone who doesn’t, I’m an athlete from Ballina but unfortunately I’m not living in Mayo at the moment so I’m not a member of Liquid Motion!!
Just popping a quick message up to let you guys know what I'm getting up to in less than a week....
I'm attempting a 13km/7 mile swim from Clare across to Galway on 24 July 2010... Without a wetsuit!!! That is at least 4 hours, and quite possibly 5 hours in the sea... It's not exactly the channel but still, it's not going to be pretty - to say the least!!However, I'm not doing this for fun, there are 20 of us hoping to do this for the very worthwhile charity "Cancer Care West". This is a fantastic organisation that supports people whose lives have been affected by cancer, and works tirelessly in the wider western region of Ireland.
I know and completely understand that there are a huge amount of great events and fantastic charity work happening in the club and throughout Ireland at the moment. So I mainly wanted to let you all know that I was doing this swim and if you wish to make any type of a donation, please click on the link below....

- Powerade SalmonRun 2010 Thankyou to all Volunteers
-
Yesterday we held our 2010 Powerade Salmon Run Triathlon. The rain held off while we prepared for the event however just as we opened transition the heavens opened. Thankfully however it did not reduce the enthusiasm of everyone competing and we had tremendous support from many local groups, family members, and friends who provided marshalling on the day.
I write this brief note to thank all of our volunteers. They are too many to list individually.
We thank the members of Grainne Uaile Sub-Aqua Club, Moy Canoe Club, the Lifeguards from Ballina Swimming Pool, the many Marshalls and great support from Ballina Festival, An Garda Siochana, Order of Malta, Civil Defence, Moy Cycling Club, Ballina Athletic Club and the Fit for Life team, The Rotary Club, all at Ballina Sports Centre, our main Sponsor Powerade and Ballina Beverages, Club members, family members, and friends.
Our provisional results are posted and we will ensure to submit the finalised results to TI as part of the 2010 National Series. We will follow with a full race report and a collection of photos on our website.
Hopefully we will see you back in 2011 and surely we can count on somewhat better weather.

- Club Jackets
-
Great news the new club jackets will be in Ballina tomorrow. They are coming down by bus in the morning and will go on sale at 12 at the Ballina Sports and Leisure Centre (same place as registration). This will allow enough time for people to wear them before and after the race.
The jackets will go on sale on a first come first serve basis to fully paid up club members only. Cost will be €50 and it will be cash only transaction. Only 1 jacket per club member and unfortunately we will be unable to hold any jackets for other people.
A huge thank you to Linda Sweeney and David Doyle who thankfully collected the parcel from the depot in Dublin and are sending it down in the morning.
-
- Club Jackets go on sale (at last)
-
The much coveted Liquid Motion cycling jackets are to arrive from Scotland tomorrow. They will go on sale on a first come first serve basis. Only fully paid club members will be able to purchase the jackets (only 1 jacket per member as there is limited stock).
The jackets which have been subsidised by the club will cost 50 euro and will go on sale at 6pm at the Ballina Swimming Pool. This will allow people to help in the preparations which are taken place at 7pm for the Salmon Run.

-
There will be a practice swim of the Salmon Run 2010 route this coming Thursday (June 24th) which has been organised with the permission of access to the slipway for the swim exit, and after advising the Fisheries. We will meet at Ballina Athletic Club Carpark (main entrance) at 5.30pm. We will then "car pool" to the start point and enter the water at 5.45pm. If you are joining then I ask that you do come first to BAC car park as we need to agree pool cars to bring people to the swim start and we also want to have a swim safety briefing. This will be the only organised practice swim of the River Moy in advance of our 2010 Salmon Run Triathlon. We are organising this event for Club members.
Anyone interested in doing the bike and run legs afterwards should make sure to bring along their gear.
See you on Thursday.

We are delighted to announce that we will be getting new club jackets this year. The jacket is from Endura and is called The Pro Windtex® Jacket.

The Pro Windtex® Jacket has a thick brushed back inner for maximum insulation in very low temperatures. Additional features include; Flatlock stitching for maximum strength and comfort, reflective detail for improved visibility and zipped rear pocket compartment for valuables with media port.
Endura has claimed that we will have the jackets before The Salmon Run Triathlon however other suppliers have let us down in the past so keep an eye here on the website or on the Facebook and Twitter page for updates and a date for purchase. There is a limited number of Jackets in the different sizes. The jackets are unisex and it is the blue Mens size guide that people should look at.

- Open Water Swimming
-
The start of the summer is here and it is time we braved the Atlantic once again.
The swimming training will follow the same format as last year sea swims. The first swim of summer will take place on Monday May 31st. We will meet at Enniscrone Pier at 7pm and then swim to the beach and back. Any weaker swimmers have the option to make the short walk back from the beach.
Swimming training will continue on a Monday evening at 7pm throughout the summer. Last year we also incorporated a run after the swims so make sure to bring the runners.
The sea swims are an ideal opportunity for any club member who wishes to gain confidence in the open water.
This training is only open to 2010 Liquid Motion Tri Club members and any individual who takes part does so at their own risk and is responsible for their own safety at all times.

- Triathlon route cycle and run
-
This evening we had our planning meeting for our 2010 Salmon Run Triathlon. Unfortunately we had a small attendance. In preparation for the SalmonRun 2010 Triathlon there will be a cycle and run to review this years route, meeting at 7pm sharp this Friday (May 7th) at the end of Bachelors Walk. This is a Club cycle and run and therefore is only open to Liquid Motion Club Members (for insurance purposes). It is not a race but a steady bike and run to review the route.
On Friday we will take the opportunity to start to confirm names of family members and friends who will be marshalling where Club members are participating in our 2010 Salmon Run. In order to ensure the safety of our Triathlon and involvement of all Club Members this year we require that 2 family members/friends are confirmed as marshalls for each Club member participating.
Looking forward to seeing you on Friday.

- Spring Duathlon Series 2010 - Race 3 Results
- We were blessed with another dry day for the final round of the duathlon series at the Ramada Hotel. As with the previous two instalments it was fiercely competitive from the off. Tom O'Dowd went out like a rocket on the opening run but was eventually over hauled before the first transition with Gareth McCormack leading in, closely followed by Tom, Stephen Donnelly and Paul Dunne. Out on the bike and into the strong headwind on the N26, Paul Dunne hit the front with only Gareth able to follow. These two went into T2 together and Gareth eked out a lead on the final run to come home in 37'24" - a time identical to Paul's course record from the March round. In the women's race Deirdre Lynn was first home again with a very quick 45'45". Well done to all who took part in the series and thanks to Paul and Mary Dunne for timings, prizes and organising post-race food and refreshments. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.

- Cape Town Argus Cycle 2010
-
In sunnier climates in South Africa, I enjoyed taking part in the 33rd Cape Argus Cycle tour. The race winds its way through breathtaking scenery in the Cape Peninsula and is extremely well supported along the 110km route. It's a fairly busy affair with over 35 thousand competing starting in 70+ waves several minutes apart, so the odd pile-up is not uncommon! Conditions were breezy and warm, but a lot more pleasant than 2009 race where the wind was so strong (see U-Tube clip) competitors struggled to start and there were thoughts of abandoning when the Porta-loos started flying across the start!
Getting to Cape Town was fairly straight forward and it was good to see the airlines had no problems with bicycle transport. I was even pleasantly surprised not to be charged by either BA or Aer Lingus!
Perhaps we might get a Liquid Motion group together for the 34th Argus in 2011?!

- Spring Duathlon Series 2010 - Race 2 Results
-
Well done to everyone who turned out at the Ramada on Saturday for the second Duathlon. The weather was near perfect and most people posted significantly faster times. It was another hotly contested race with David Sands shaking things up with a scorching opeing run. However Paul Dunne showed much improved running form to stay in touch and then put his slick transition skills to great use to come out on the bike in the lead. He built up a healthy lead on the bike, which was more than enough to hold off the chase on the second run.
Next race is on the 24th April at 11am (sign on at 10.30am) at the Ramada. Tea and sandwiches after.

- Spring Duathlon Series 2010 - Race 1 results
-
Finally the results for race one of the Spring Duathlon Series are available. There was an excellent turnout of 25 on what started out as a mild and very spring-like morning, and ended with a wintry deluge. A stiff headwind on the outward section of the bike also made the going tough. We also had a few visiting competitiors. Both the men's and women's races were very close with the lead in the men's race changing hands several times.
Its forecast dry with light winds on Saturday so get out to the Ramada and see if you can beat your mark. Race starts 11am sharp with sign on at 10.30am. Please note that only people with Triathlon Ireland membership will be allowed to compete (either full or associate). The last race in the series will take place on the 24th April where tea and sandwiches will be provided in the Ramada Hotel.

- TI Training for race officials and race directors
-
Triathlon Ireland are organising training for race officials and race directors to take place on Saturday 6th March in Galway (see TI Web site for details). I will attend as race director for our PowerAde Salmon Run Triathlon 2010, and Deirdre Lynn has confirmed her attendance which is great as Deirdre took on board the role of TD in 2009 and supported several events. Stephen Donnelly has also volunteered to attend and represent our club as a TI race official. Please can you let me know by replying to our club email address, replying to this news item, or giving me a call, if you are interested in attending this training and representing TI (and Liquid Motion) as a race official during the 2010 season.

- CLub Meeting Monday March 1st
-
Everyone, I am calling a club meeting to take place at the Dock Bar at 8pm on Monday March 1st. As we all know this is our main club event of 2010, and this year has the added importance of being accepted as a a TI National Series Event. I ask everyone to attend as it is important that we form our strongest organising committee to date to build on all of the successes, and that we as a club continue to ensure that the PowerAde Salmon Run Triathlon is one of the premier Triathlons on the Irish calendar.
Thanks

- Cycle Transport Box
- Hi Does anyone have a bicycle hardcase that I could rent or borrow for 2.5 weeks in March? Going to South Africa and can't justify forking out €250 for a new. Having said that, if I borrowed yours and anything happened to it, I'd replace it of course. Please let me know. Thanks, Simon rees.qs@gmail.com

Triathlon Ireland eBulletin – 17/01/10
Just over two weeks into the new year and I wonder how many well intentioned resolutions are still intact. 2010 promises to be massive for triathlon in Ireland with more events than ever, and the hosting of the European Championships in Athlone in July. Hopefully there will be something on the calendar for everyone interested in our sport, regardless of location or ability.
In order to get a strong organizational structure to ensure that 2010 runs smoothly, we’ll be hosting our Annual General Meeting on 30th January. We thought that it would therefore be appropriate to provide some early information as to the business of the day and the full AGM booklet will be available on the TI website four or five days prior to the meeting. Nominations close this Friday and it will take a further couple of days to then finalise the booklet.
Nominations received to date:
President - Mark Riseley (proposed – Brian Heffernan, seconded – Thomas Duffy)
Secretary - Conal Heatley (proposed – Peter Jack, seconded – Hugh McAtamney)
Treasurer - Matt Coughlan (proposed – Peter Coughlan, seconded – John Walnutt)
Three of the provincial representatives will also require ratification following their previous co-option by the board. Tommy Linton was elected at the Ulster branch AGM but the other provinces have not had similar meetings. Eidin Christie has been representing Munster for some time now and Karl McCann (Leinster) and Tony Daley (Connaught) have also agreed to offer their services. For the first time in a number of years, this will provide Triathlon Ireland with a fully constituted board approved by the membership.
The AGM will also see the usual reports being presented by the office bearers and the discussion of any motions that are submitted. To date, two have been drafted by the board. The first of which calls for an EGM to be held in May, the second looks at permanently changing the date of future AGMs.
The May EGM (possibly Saturday 8th) will allow the finances for 2009 to be presented and voted upon. This will then bring all accounts up to date. Unfortunately, due to the historic January AGM date, there has never been time to finalise accounts and present immediately, leading to our current situation whereby the accounts presented each year are actually 13 months old. The EGM will also see a new Constitution being offered to the membership for approval. The current document is dated and is not suitable for a modern governing body. Following legal advice, and with input from the sports councils and our membership, a new Constitution will be drafted and presented to members in each of the provinces prior to the EGM.
The second motion will look to permanently rectify the presentation of accounts issue by moving the AGM date. If the annual meeting is held in March or April each year, sufficient time will be available to finalise accounts and have them audited. The closing date for any additional motions is also Friday 22nd January.
Tickets for the Annual Awards Dinner are now available by ‘phoning the Triathlon Ireland office on 01 276 4934. This black tie affair will take place in the O’Callaghan Davenport Hotel, Merrion Square, Dublin following the AGM. Full details are on the website.
Yours in Sport
